I have a summer backyard shed project that has expanded into the fall.
It started out as something that I thought would just take me a few days, but has grown into many weekends of work.
Now I’m almost finished (finally).
All it needs now are some shingles and paint.
This shed is far from an example of perfect construction.
The door hangs a little crooked (those doors can be hard to build perfectly), and there are some small gaps between the walls and ceiling.
But I’m okay with an imperfect shed.
I’ve never built a shed before, and it was great to get out the hammer and saw after many years of doing no construction work.
It even has me thinking that I might build some cribbage boards by hand as Christmas gifts this year.
However, when it comes to our laboratory, we strive for perfection.
For instance, the other day we were using our laboratory attrition scrubbers to break down some clusters in a frac sand sample.
When we were done – even though I had several hours of labor (my labor and technician labor) into the project – I wasn’t happy with the clusters that were left.
So we scrubbed it again.
When doing the frac sand crush test, sometimes the crush test results will vary. Even though we average 3 results, if the variance is too high, we will test some more and throw out the outliers.
So – my backyard shed is imperfect, and I’m ok with that.
My laboratory business is imperfect, but I’m NOT ok with that.
We will keep striving for excellence, and perfecting our techniques. Our clients deserve nothing less.
